Yorkshire Terrier Puppy Vaccination Schedule: When Should Yorkie Puppies Receive Vaccines?
One of the most important responsibilities of a new puppy owner is ensuring their puppy receives proper vaccinations. At Enchanted Acres Yorkies, we want every puppy to have the healthiest start possible. Vaccinations help protect puppies from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases while allowing them to safely explore the world around them.
Because puppies receive temporary immunity from their mother's milk, they require a series of vaccines during their first few months of life to build long-term protection.
Why Are Vaccines Important?
Vaccines help protect puppies against highly contagious diseases that can spread through direct contact, contaminated environments, wildlife, and even the shoes of people entering your home. Some diseases, such as Parvovirus and Distemper, can be fatal, especially in young puppies.
Vaccinating your Yorkie according to a veterinarian-approved schedule significantly reduces these risks and helps ensure a long, healthy life. The schedule that follows is what we use at Enchanted Acres Yorkies. Please consult with your veterinarian about the proper schedule for your new puppy.
One thing we do adhere to, and insist upon is that our puppies do not receive more than one vaccine in a two week period. It means more trips to the vet but it is very important to the fragile immune systems of our precious dogs. They just don’t seem to be able to handle more than one vaccine at a time.
Recommended Yorkie Puppy Vaccination Schedule
8 Weeks of Age
At this age, puppies typically receive their first combination vaccine, often called a DHPP vaccine, which helps protect against:
Distemper
Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
Parainfluenza
Parvovirus
Many breeders and veterinarians administer the first vaccine between 6 and 8 weeks of age.
12 Weeks of Age
The second DHPP booster is usually given during this period. This booster strengthens the puppy's developing immunity and helps ensure protection against these dangerous diseases.
Depending on your location and veterinarian's recommendations, additional vaccines may be discussed at this visit.
16 Weeks of Age
Most puppies receive their final DHPP booster during this time.
This visit often includes:
Final puppy DHPP booster
Annual DHPP
We give our dogs their booster shots every year. If you aren’t comfortable getting the DHPP every year then you should have a titer done to determine if your dog has enough antibodies do resist the common diseases. This is done at your vet’s office.
After this vaccination, your puppy's immune system is much better equipped to handle exposure to public environments.
Rabies Vaccine
Rabies vaccination requirements vary by state and local regulations. At Enchanted Acres Yorkies, we recommend discussing the timing of your puppy's rabies vaccination with your veterinarian. For very small Yorkshire Terriers, many owners choose to wait until the puppy reaches 6 months of age or weighs at least 2 pounds, whichever comes later, provided this complies with local laws and your veterinarian's recommendations.
Your veterinarian can advise you regarding the safest timing for your individual puppy, as well as local rabies vaccination requirements and future booster schedules.
What About Leptospirosis, Lyme, Bordetella, and Other Vaccines?
Not every puppy requires every available vaccine.
Your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccinations based on:
Your geographic location
Exposure to wildlife
Boarding or grooming needs
Dog parks and social activities
Travel plans
Common optional vaccines include:
Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
Often recommended for dogs that will be:
Groomed regularly
Boarded
Attending training classes
Visiting dog parks
Leptospirosis and Lyme
We don’t vaccinate our dogs with Lepto or Lyme vaccines at Enchanted Acres Yorkies because we’ve had bad experiences with them. Several of our dogs had difficulty standing and functioning for several days after getting these vaccines. We have large dogs that receive them without problems and they get them annually. However, we don’t feel our little ones handle them well so we refrain from giving those vaccines to them. They can be recommended for dogs exposed to wildlife, standing water, farms, or rural environments. Discuss this with your veterinarian.
Canine Influenza
Sometimes recommended in areas where canine flu outbreaks occur or for dogs with frequent social exposure.
Can My Puppy Go Outside Before Completing Vaccines?
This is one of the most common questions new puppy owners ask.
Puppies should avoid public areas where unknown dogs have been until they complete their vaccination series. Places such as pet stores, dog parks, rest stops, and public sidewalks can expose puppies to diseases before they are fully protected.
However, puppies still need socialization. Safe options include:
Your own yard
Visits with fully vaccinated dogs you know
Carrying your puppy in public places
Puppy socialization programs approved by your veterinarian
Vaccination Records Matter
Always keep a copy of your puppy's vaccination records. You may need them for:
Veterinary visits
Grooming appointments
Boarding facilities
Training classes
Travel requirements
A well-maintained vaccination record helps ensure your Yorkie receives boosters at the appropriate times throughout life.
